TITLE: Cut Your Data Models Down to Size – Use Generic Modeling

SUMMARY (What will the participant learn from your presentation? Please do not exceed 3 sentences.)

Using generic modeling techniques, the number of tables in a database can be decreased by up to 50%, while
simultaneously making the model more robust. Learn a variety of generic modeling techniques to improve your
data models in this presentation.

ABSTRACT (A brief description of your presentation. Please do not exceed 200 words.)

There are a variety of generic modeling techniques. When most people think of generic modeling, they only think of the fully flexible models that Ulka Rodgers and David Hay have been talking about for years. However, those types of generic structures are only one of many types that can be used to decrease the size of models. These techniques are as follows:

1. Overloading reference tables
2. Storing relationships in a table
3. Recursive reference tables
4. Overloading primary data tables

All of these techniques will be discussed in this presentation. All data models will be shown in both ERD and UML syntax.
